Agate and DBYs

As soon as I saw the combo of DBYs and Agate (officer) I was interested in trying to figure out if it’s possible to make that combo worth taking. That is what we are going to talk about in this week’s AMM. I will share everything I could come up with and see if we can find a place where the DBY and Agate (officer) has the potential to shine.

We will start with something that is the least exciting option in my opinion Vanguard.

Nebulon-B Support Refit (51)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

• Vanguard (4)

• Local Fire Control (4)

= 67 Point

All I can really say about this option is it’s something you could do, but I don’t think it would be worth it. You in effect pay 8 points to gain access to salvo then another 8 points for the Agate DBY combo. It just feels like way too much of an investment for very little payback, but it is an option.

Another one that is not that exciting is the MC-30 probably best with the Admonition title.

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• Reactive Gunnery (4)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

• Admonition (6)

= 81 Points

With this you use Reactive to salvo and DBY can flip either your black to a hit crit or the blue/red (depending on the MC-30 you bring) to trigger Agate. Unfortunately, because you have to discard the readied token “during the spend defense token step” with Admonition you can’t spend a token to salvo then reddy it with Agate then discard for Admonitions effect. This is more to ensure you have redied defense tokens when the time arises to use Admo. I think this is pretty niche at best, but reactive with DBY on an MC-30 just seems interesting to me, adding in Agate not sure if that will make it really that much better.

Now we get into the slightly more interesting options.

MC80 Assault Cruiser (114)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• Reactive Gunnery (4)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

= 126 Points

Reactive gunnery on an MC80 assault with two defensive retrofits seems almost like a no-brainer. Adding in Agate can help stretch out this ship’s single brace making it more durable and salvo giving it some extra punch. For example, the MC80 will take two shots this round if you have Agate as long as you reactive salvo against your first attacker you can spend the brace then ready it with Agate. This can make an already durable ship even more durable. Even though this is a simple get more value out of a brace if Agate can help you negate a few extra damage a turn she will be very much worth it; you just have to make sure the crit will stick.

MC75 Armored Cruiser (104)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• Local Fire Control (4)

• Flak Guns (3)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

= 119 Points

The MC-75 armored cruiser gives us some interesting options. Much like the MC-80 Agate when paired with DBYs will help the brace go further and if you can negate a few extra damage points that’s worth it. Now is this better than the MC80 assault option? Probably not. However, if you have a really good reason to take an MC75 over an 80 this might be worth considering.

Starhawk Battleship Mark I (140)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• Local Fire Control (4)

• Flak Guns (3)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

• Amity (6)

= 161 Points

The Starhawk is also a great option if you get the red crit with agate you can always flip the black to the hit crit. With Amity we have a lot of single diffuse tokens and since we are taking Agate (officer) she won’t be our commander so we have no way to get extra defense tokens. However, with two salvos keeping tokens fresh with Agate will help keep the ships alive. I think this is a good option if you are not taking Agate as your commander and are running a Starhawk, but I do think you need a really good reason to not take Agate and run a Starhawk.

Lastly and probably the one that I find the most interesting is the assault frigate.

Assault Frigate Mk2 A (81)

• Kyrsta Agate (5)

• Reactive Gunnery (4)

• DBY-827 Heavy Turbolasers (3)

= 93 Points

The assault frigate only has a single copy of both braces evade and redirect officer Agate can come in quite handy letting you salvo with reactive gunnery to sneak in some extra damage and then ready the token so it’s ready for when it needs to be used for its effect this will normally be the redirect. This pairs well with the paragon salvo build that gained a bit of traction before clone wars hit. It also seems like a nice option when paired with Mon Mon Mothma using Agate to help stretch out the usefulness of the evade to get more value from Mon Mon Mothma.

I’m really interested in seeing how this officer Agate with DBYs works out. It is if nothing else interesting and is one of the factors motivating me to get the civil war factions back to the table. I still need to get a few more games with each of the clone wars ships before I return to the civil war factions. Have you tried out DBYs with Agate (officer)? If so what did you think? What do you think are some ways to get DBYs and Agate to work that I did not share? Until next time have a great week!
