Decommissioned: Redemption

Running in tandem with the commander emeritus sires that started last week looking at commanders that seem to have taken a retirement from commanding fleets, I will also be doing the decommissioned series looking at ship titles that no longer see play. This week we are going to start the series by looking at the title Redemption for the Nebulon-B, so lets dive into it.

Looking at redemption it's a pretty strait forward card friendly ships at distance 1-5 get an additional engineering point every time they resolve an engineering command. It seams pretty bland and to be honest is a bit expensive, but it has far more unity than one might think at first glance. All rebel ships outside of flotillas and the corvettes have 3 or more engineering, Redemption will not be doing a whole lot for these ships without even more investment in engineering tokens or tech.

CR90 Corvette A (44)

• Engineering Team (5)

= 49 Points

This lets the Corvette regain two shields with engineering dial when paired with redemption, or just regain a shield or damage card with a token, but if you are having to get rid of a damage card on a CR-90 it might already be a little to late.

Hammerhead Torpedo Corvette (36)

• Task Force Antilles (3)

= 39 Points

A Task Force Antilles Hammerhead group could regain lost shields with just a token with redemption help, but if you took the damage you cant spend engineering points as TFA is extenuated so it makes this a bit convoluted, and oddly Shields to Maximum is the better choice here. Redemption just dose not really do enough for ships with an engineering value of two however it does a good deal for ships with engineering 3 particularly the Nebulon.

With the addition of Auxiliary Shield Teams the Nebulons are the ship that really seams to want to take them however it does not seam like enough most of the time, but redemption acutely makes it a bit more interesting. Without Redemption the Nebulon on turn one with a engineering command can gain a shield to one of its sides and then take one from the rear and transfer it to the other side increasing the total nebulon shielding by 1, however if you add in Redemption you can instead of moving one for the rear to the side just gain that one on the side this give you a total shielding increase of 2, Vanguard can make very good use of this extra shielding with its redirect token, and other Nebulons can as well by moving up to 3 shields around with a single engineering token.

The only other Rebel ship with engineering 3 is the MC-30, redemption can be nice for them as they can whip all 3 shields from the ships far side to the side that is taking damage, its not insane, but its nice, also resolving a engineering command become a bit more interesting as you can gain back two shields particularly with the foresight title for more redirecting goodness.

MC30c Torpedo Frigate (63)

• Ordnance Experts (4)

• Redundant Shields (8)

• External Racks (3)

• Foresight (8)

= 86 Points

All other rebel ships have engineering 4 so what does redemption do for them? Well it's really all about he supped up token, particularly for broadside ships. Being able to take 3 shields from your far side to the side that is getting all the action by just spending a token can significantly increase your ships survivability, and with how easy it is to get your hands on a tokens these days it should be no issue to have one on hand when needed. In addition some face-up damage cards have very annoying persistent effects and you can just toss it with a token, its a bit more viable to do this on ships that have more hull than less hull, but it really will depend on and effect like maybe you have a killing shot, but its at long range and you have the depowered armament damage card toss that with just the token boom you can now attack.

Redemption is a bit expensive for what it does, but I don't think it should be entirely overlooked, particularly if you want to bring auxiliary shield techs on a Nebulon or two. It has it's uses outside of that as well, but I think this ship would see a lot more play if it where cheaper, and or the rebellion had more engineering 3 ships particularly ones that could take advantage of Auxiliary Shield teams. How have you run Redemption, what do you think is needed to get this ship back on the table? Here is a list I ran with Redemption and it was actually pretty useful. Until next time have a great week!
