So I was on the fence about salvo, but after playing several game with it and seeing the effect it can have in game I am converted.
Salvo won me one of the games I played with it as my opponent attacked me to try and finish me off, but was unable to, this attack let me salvo, and I got the last bit of damage on his ship to kill it before it moved out of range.
In another game salvo did over 9 damage over the course of the game and in most cases because the damage came in small amounts tokens where not spent in many cases so damage would stick to ships and whittle them down.
Another game my opponent locked down my salvo over other defense tokens as they did not want to take the salvo. they would not have died from the salvo, but they could not have escaped a medirocer 4 dice side arc shot with the ship meaning if he let me salvo he would have taken 7 total dice and that could have been deadly.
I think my biggest complaint about salvo is the limited number of ships that can take it, but after seeing it in action I am far more willing to put it on ships that can take it.
Use MC-75 to block a ship in a double arc and get a little extra damage on it when it attacks you:
MC75 Armored Cruiser (104) • Local Fire Control (4) • Electronic Countermeasures (7) • External Racks (3) • Leading Shots (4) • H9 Turbolasers (8) = 130 Points
It might seem crazy, but if you can keep this guy in a not so scary arch with Raddus or good maneuvering, you could get basily 2 free damage every time someone attacks you.
MC80 Star Cruiser (96) • Local Fire Control (4) • SW-7 Ion Batteries (5) • Linked Turbolaser Towers (7) • Mon Karren (8) = 120 Points
The small amounts of damage this guy can pile on is really going to add up over the course of the game.
Nebulon-B Support Refit (51) • Auxiliary Shields Team (3) • Linked Turbolaser Towers (7) • Vanguard (4) • Local Fire Control (4) = 69 Points
The Paragon dream, Salvo then get to add a black die to each attack on the ship you just salvoed yes please!
Assault Frigate Mk2 A (81) • Local Fire Control (4) • Electronic Countermeasures (7) • Linked Turbolaser Towers (7) • Paragon (5) = 104 Points
A Screed enabled Demolisher with salvo could be interesting as you can use Screed once per activacation meaning you can salvo at close range during your opponent's activation spend the red to get a hit crit on the black if you want.
sure you can't do a special crit, but still its 2 damage, and then you can use screed on your turn to get you special crit off add Beck because her and Screed are such a cute couple, and she will give you some more rerolls in a pinch.
Gladiator I (56) • Admiral Screed (26) • Commander Beck (3) • Local Fire Control (4) • Assault Proton Torpedoes (5) • Demolisher (10) = 104 Points
The safest way to engage is to engage one ship at a time, if this is your tactic, it might be worth considering over gunney teams on you ISD's, but particularly the Kuat and ISD-I like to take the salvo upgrade.
Imperial I (110) • Local Fire Control (4) • Leading Shots (4) • Linked Turbolaser Towers (7) = 125 Points
ISD Kuat Refit (112) • Local Fire Control (4) • Electronic Countermeasures (7) • Leading Shots (4) • External Racks (3) = 130 Points
the lowly raider, may not be amazing, but a free damage is a free damage, and if you are not taking Iden or she is already on another ship it gets you that little extra damage when you get attacked.
Raider II (48) • Local Fire Control (4) • Disposable Capacitors (3) • SW-7 Ion Batteries (5) = 60 Points
My biggest disappointment with Salvo is the limited number of ships that can take it, I would love to put salvo on a Arquitens and Interdictor for the empire and and MC80 and pelta for the rebels, I mean sure you could put a salvo on an MC80 or pelta with agate, but not sure the best use for her is to give a ship a salvo, but I don't know maybe?
MC80 Assault Cruiser (114) • Kyrsta Agate (20) • Walex Blissex (5) • Electronic Countermeasures (7) • Early Warning System (7) • SW-7 Ion Batteries (5) • Linked Turbolaser Towers (7) • Defiance (5) = 170 Points
It would also be kind of fun to put it on a GR-75 Combat just for some fun. It's possible that we get another way to add salvo that does not invalidate Local Fire Control, like a cheep officer that gives a ship that does not have a weapon teams slot a weapons team slot, but they can only equip a weapon team that cost 5 or less this keeps Flight Controllers and Gunnery Teams off things like the MC-80, I don't know, I just really want a salvo on an interdictor, and MC-80 but we will see, maybe that makes thoughts ships too good.
Have you got in a few games with salvo? what do you think of it? I am excited to get some more experience with all the upgrades and the two ships that came in wave 8 and find interesting ways to use them, but until next time have a great week!
